The Computer Science Collection is an effort to document the history of the department, beginning with recent achievements. The collection consists primarily of the following:
- Servers and GPUs used during the period surrounding the emergence of AlexNet in 2012. AlexNet was a groundbreaking convolutional neural network (CNN) applied to visual learning. This material documents a landmark in the emergence of deep learning algorithms that presaged the AI boom. This material documents the research of Geoffrey Hinton and his graduate students, Alex Krizhevsky and Ilya Sutskever, with technical support from sysadmin Relu Patrascu.
- Several items related to the history of supercomputers at the University of Toronto in the 1980s and 1990s, notably two Cray X-MPs and a KSR-1-32. This material belongs to the personal collection of long-time U of T sysadmin Norman WIlson.
- Other items of historical interest collected by Computer Science faculty member John DiMarco.
