Clock Synchronization System

Geophysics · Physics

This apparatus consists of two similar electronics enclosures with various dials, switches, and sockets on a front-facing console. Both have metal handles on the top surface:

2024.ph.880.1: This unit differs from its counterpart as it includes a frequency trim dial on the front console.

2024.ph.880.2: This unit differs from its counterpart as it has black electrical tape wrapped around the front console. It has a four-pin plug emerging from the back of the case.

Accession Number: 2024.ph.880.1-2

Alternative Name: Pulse Generator

Primary Materials: Iron Alloy

Markings:

Both units are marked with the model number: “EW88-003”

2023.ph.880.1: A label at the rear of the unit includes the following stamped serial number: “EM 70010”

2023.ph.880.2: A label at the rear of the unit includes the following stamped serial number: “EM 70011”
Peeling white labels at the top of this unit reads as follows: “CAREFUL! Altered Power Supply.”

Dimensions (cm):

Each unit: Height = 23.5, Width = 18, Length = 27.

Function:

These units, each containing a clock crystal, were used to synchronize two signals. The dial on 2024.ph.880.1 was adjusted until the clock signal matched 2024.ph.880.2.

Condition:

Both units are heavily worn. Both are covered in various places with tape (duct and electrical) as well as old adhesive from tape and labels.

Associated Instruments:

Manufacturer: University of Toronto Machine Shop.

Date of Manufacture: c. 1970 to 1990.

Provenance:

This artifact is part of a small collection gathered from the office of Prof. Nigel Edwards of the University of Toronto Department of Physics in March of 2022.
