Autopsy Knife (Shaw Mfg. Co.)

A steel knife with a steel handle. Blade and handle seem to be formed from a single piece of metal, possibly to facilitate autoclaving. A grip pattern is moulded or engraved into opposite sides of the handle.

Note that the stamped manufacturer’s label on the handle is illegible at one side. The manufacturer may be “P. Shaw” or “R. Shaw”

This artifact is intact and undamaged. There are light signs of wear on the handle. There are small dark patches on the blade that can likely be removed with cleaning.

Provenance:

The Mount Sinai Pathology Lab collection was transferred from a display case on the 6th floor of Mount Sinai Hospital (600 University Ave. Toronto, On) over several days in mid-December 2020.
