Hip Fixation Device (Down Bros.)

Health Sciences · Robert W. Jackson Arthroscopy

A metal device consisting of two sections joined together at their extremities by a bolt. The shorter section consists of a nail-like protrusion with a three-edged cross section. The second section, a plate with a plate with four screw holes, is joined to it at an angle.

Both sections are sheathed in a clear removable covering.

Accession Number: 2025.JAC.290

Alternative Name:

Primary Materials: Stainless Steel

Markings:

Stamped on one facet of the nail-like section near the joint between the two pieces: “DOWN BROS”; Stamped on an adjacent facet: “3 1/2”

Dimensions (cm):

Dimensions a minimum extension: Height = 16, Width – 1.4, Length = 12.5.

Function:

This device is used to repair hip fractures. The nail-like section is inserted through the neck of the femur into the ball of the hip. The opposite end is bolted to the end of the plate, which is anchored to the femur by cortical screws.

This is a non-dynamical fixture, meaning that the two sections are connected rigidly. Such implants were superseded by dynamical fixtures, such as 2025.JAC.289 and 2025.JAC.290, which allowed for compression of the hip fracture without risk of the fixture piercing through the femoral head.
