This is a small collection of artifacts that has been gathered by Archie’s Cochlear Implant Lab at The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids). It is part of the overall Hospital for Sick Children Collection. These items represent various stages of the technology used since the lab’s founding by Drs. Karen Gordon and Blake Papsin in 1998.
Most of the items were manufactured by Cochlear, ltd. of Sydney, Australia, a company that has long been the incumbent manufacturer of cochlear implants. There are also examples of vibrotactile and bone conduction implants.
These items remain on site and in possession of the Lab. They are used for teaching and demonstration purposes.
The collection was photographed and catalogued in October and November of 2025 by Curator Erich Weidenhammer as part of a research project into the material culture of prosthetics funded by Associated Medical Services.
